چکیده

Dissolution of wind blown dust is a major source of iron, manganese, and other trace nutrients in the ocean. Kinetic and thermodynamic values for the release of metals from dust are needed for computer models which incorporate dust as part of their ocean system. Here we investigate both the thermodynamic and kinetics parameters involved in the dissolution of metals from dust in seawater. We added dust from the Sahara and the Western United States in five different concentrations (0.01 5.0 mg/L), representative of those concentrations found in seawater after dust events, to open ocean Pacific seawater. Sub-sampling of the reaction vessels took place on days 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, and 35 for the kinetic

Dissolution Kinetic Evaluation of Manganese-rich Iron ore by Sulphuric acid Solution

This study investigated the optimum conditions for the leaching of manganese-rich iron ore for subsequent beneficiation studies in laboratory scale. The experiments were carried out by varying the concentration of H2 SO4 solution and the leaching temperature. The properties of the iron ore was characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)...

Rapid and gradual modes of aerosol trace metal dissolution in seawater

Atmospheric deposition is a major source of trace metals in marine surface waters and supplies vital micronutrients to phytoplankton, yet measured aerosol trace metal solubility values are operationally defined, and there are relatively few multi-element studies on aerosol-metal solubility in seawater. Here we measure the solubility of aluminum (Al), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron...

Iron and Manganese Micro-Precipitates Within a Cretaceous Biosiliceous Ooze from the Arctic Ocean: Possible Hydrothermal Source

The oldest sediment most recently recovered from the Arctic Ocean is a biosiliceous ooze nearly devoid of nonbiogenic particles and exhibiting small-scale color changes. Color variations are due to changes in iron and manganese content. These elements are probably of local hydrothermal origin, and the Mn precipitation may be bacteria-mediated. An iron silicate phase seems to form at the expense...

Phytoplankton responses to atmospheric metal deposition in the coastal and open-ocean Sargasso Sea

This study investigated the impact of atmospheric metal deposition on natural phytoplankton communities at open-ocean and coastal sites in the Sargasso Sea during the spring bloom. Locally collected aerosols with different metal contents were added to natural phytoplankton assemblages from each site, and changes in nitrate, dissolved metal concentration, and phytoplankton abundance and carbon c...
